I’m challenging myself to see if I can grow/trade/forage 50% of our #vegetables for our whānau of 4 in #2026.*

*Vegetables as defined commercially, so tomatos count but apples don’t and green beans count but chickpeas don’t. I’m also keeping track of hiw much fruit we harvest and continuing to plant fruit trees/vines but because they take a long time to produce, veggies are the measurable target this year.

#Dinner is served. beans, broccoli, beet leaves, kale, and cherry tomatos from our #Garden

.@MichaelaKHulse’s harvest from our garden this evening: Veg for four, a little bit of this and a little bit of that depending on what is ripe.

Set up my Wood Blewits #Mushroom patch. I chose to grow these because they fruit in winter, and my long standing garden goal is to have as wide a variety of food available throughout the year as possible. A friend who had grown outdoor mushrooms before said something like ‘really? The internet says they’re quite challenging and take a long time’ … We’ll see. If I just wasted $25 and 2 hours of my time, then I did. They are trying to grow in a shady corner of my garden behind some canna lilies, in layers of compost, wood chips, grass clippings, and rabbit manure, all sprinkled and mixed with gypsum.

Third pic is checking in on my shaggy mane patch two weeks in by gently peeling back the top layer of grass clippings… looks promising.

Initially the idea was to grow mushrooms on logs and patches so I could spend a few hours setting them up, forget about them, and come back for a harvest. Unfortunately, it seems I now have the mushroom bug and am contemplating buying some oyster spawn to grow in buckets while I wait the 12+ months my truly natural renditions could take to colonise.

Finally managed to get fresh wood chips for my King Stropharia mushroom spawn, which I have now ‘planted’. Hope it gives us lots of mushrooms. Picked out the place where I will put my wood blewits. Also got some compost for them but the kids were going crazy by the time I had set up the KS patch, (how dare mum have a hobby) so the blewits will have to wait. Waiting is a common part of gardening.
