This is one of my favourite albums and tours in the Zappa universe!
Still recovering... Zappa finally assumed the role of composer and orchestra maestro, assembled a mini-band of 20 musicians to go on tour. The musicians included jazz players, contemporary musicians, studio musicians, and some members of the Mothers.
The Grand Wazoo is hilarious, jazzy, comical, orchestral, and a great piece of music. The band was put together to record this music, go on tour, and disband at the end. This is another instrumental album in the same line as the Waka Jawaka but more orchestral.
From what I know about this tour, there is an original vinyl box set (Zappa/Wazzo), the Bootleg box set (The Pettite Wazoo), a bootleg called "Grand Wazoo Comic Book Extravaganza" and a "Grand Wazoo Orchestra" record part of the 20 years of Frank Zappa (bootleg boxset)
All the bootlegs were recorded in different places and with many variations.
This is a great album from a great music composer.
EDIT: There is one record published after Zappa's death called: "Frank Zappa – Imaginary Diseases". This is a missing piece from the same time as the Grand Wazoo. If you know someone who has it, just let me know!
