On 9 May 2023, two men were held guilty of gangraping a 26-year-old during riots in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Of seven women allegedly raped, X, as she is called in court records, was the only one who did not give up, enduring trauma, intimidation and poverty over the nine-year trial. The rapists sought adjournments, despite being given bail on the condition that they would not. Charges were framed four years after the chargesheet, judges were transferred thrice and she moved the Supreme Court three times to keep the trial on track. Now 36 and a mother of three, she tells us how she kept going.
