In related news: Anyone interested in being a beta reader for #sapphic, polyamorous, slice-of-life romance books set in a world where catgirls exist and not everyone's kind to them?
The first book i need readers for has a main character with #autism, and #selectivemutism & other characters with #mutism, #autism, #LimbDifference (amputated hand), and scaring. The last two don't play a big part in the story.
side note: Not a furry story.
The main character in the book I'm writing has selective mutism.
In order to write much of her character, I just took my personal experiences and feelings, jacked them up to eleven, and did a little research to confirm things.
I don't have #selectivemutism but in the mornings I feel like I'm on the edge of it.
This morning I stumbled across the /r/selectivemutism subreddit and am kind-of blown away by how close my assumptions are to people's lived experiences.
"why are you so quiet?"
because I got yelled at for being loud as a kid and my brain was like, "oh, okay . I have to be quiet for the rest of my life now."

Anyone else have this issue of bringing conversations to a stop?
Is it what they call selective mutism because of my anxiety?
My daughter can talk and talk and talk about whatever but it seems like she is conversing and not just talking. I think it’s cool and i want to be able to do that. She is so good at it, I sometimes can’t believe she’s my kid.
Growing up, I struggled with "Selective Mutism," an anxiety response that caused me to go silent and mute for extended periods of time. It wasn't until I discovered my core values that I was able to overcome this challenge and find my voice.

I had situational mutism as a kid/teen and still as an adult, and I'm curious, for those who have experienced it, what went on in your head during it? How would you personally describe your inner world/experience while it was happening?
