Golden Hour on Lough Aderry

I think this is my first or perhaps second time stopping at Lough Aderry, just outside Castlemartyr in Co. Cork. I’ve passed by there many times but in the evening when the light is good it’s always with the aim of getting home after a possibly long day away.

This evening I did stop as there was a nice sunset. The sun had dipped below a cloudbank just as we arrived but there was still a glow in the air. I was delighted to see swans swimming and feeding in the cool evening air!

The Swan Whisperer of Galway

If you’ve ever wandered down to the Claddagh in Galway, you’ll know the swans are less “graceful wild creatures” and more “assertive locals who know exactly when the bread’s coming out.”

That’s what happened on this day in 2005 when we visited and saw a young woman feeding those swans. Other birds wanted crumbs of bread too! Now we know that bread is not an ideal food for birds. Green vegetables are better for them.

#GavinNewsom wants you to come to #California and kill #swans, and has made it legal to shoot them without any license or permit.

A recent #CalMatters report citing state wildlife researchers’ data on #MuteSwans estimated there are more than 12,000 of these 25lb and up orange beaked EU import birds in he state, a ten fold increase in just 3 years.

A study on east coast found they eat up to 8lbs a day of submerged #aquatic vegetation, destroying #habitat and food sources for native species faster than #grasses could ever recover.
