Zappa presents himself as a composer! Even so, I am not dying for this particular Zappa record, I recognise the work involved and the composition behind. I do find this to be the first of a continuous composition work, and I very much relate this record with the "civilisation phase III" that came out as a double CD much later in time... (Is this phase 2 of: We're Only In It For The Money)?
#Orchestral #compositions conducted by Zappa; early use of musique concrète and tape editing; spoken word “piano people” segments recorded inside a grand piano; two-part suite structure; blend of classical, experimental sound collage, jazz elements, and studio manipulation; part of Zappa’s wider “conceptual continuity” across albums.
Special note for the intro track reused from the composition soundtrack of the movie"Run Home Slow" and the last track of the album, an instrumental of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" from the album "We're Only in it for the money"
The result is not a collection of songs but a continuous piece split into two sides, moving between written passages and abstract interruptions. This is definitely an experimental audio art composition, far out from the time it was published in 1968 and from the rock scene at the time.
This album is also an important starting point in Zappa’s solo catalogue. It lays the groundwork for ideas he would revisit later, and is almost a tribute to his idol, "Edgard Varese".
Definitely Zappa's first orchestral collage of pre-recorded sounds and orchestral research absurdities is a kick on the door for the next orchestral adventures.
