@Sophie Hassfurther I am reposting something my dear friend and colleague posted on Instagram, on Sonny Rollins death.
Sonny…
I remember the utterly confused face of the carpet seller at grand bazaar in Istanbul, when I tried to bargain to lower the price of that carpet Sonny’s wife liked. Translators were expected to get their 10 percent share from the sales when they brought customers those days. What that carpet seller didn’t realize was that, having time to chat with Sonny Rollins about world politics, how racist Disney is, Japanese cuisine, and not to mention things about “Bird”, “Miles” and why unlearning what you practice for ten years takes twenty years, was my priceless share I would still be feeding myself from, even 35 years later … I cannot show you any photos, because it was early nineties and I didn’t even have a “regular” camera. So instead, I’ll leave you with what I am doing here and now thinking of his relentless musical and humanitarian force.
“World is on fire and you’re talking jazz!“ you yell…
It’s not jazz I’m talking about, it’s peace.
