It's been a while since I posted #MusicFromTheMotherland but there were some great soundtracks in the various films at the festival. Last night I saw COTTON QUEEN about a Sudanese woman and her fight to preserve natural cotton versus GMA seed, among other issues. Artist Amira Kheir is featured on the soundtrack. Here's a taste of her music. https://youtu.be/ofOxEtEzIyw

Apr. 30th was #InternationalJazzDay and since today is also Friday, I'm sharing a clip of Gwana Jazz Master Abdellah El-Gourd. Gwana music emerged out of the cultural fusion of West African spirituality and music with North Africa music. Jazz artists from the US became attracted to Gwana and incorporated some of its elements. Fast forward to 16:58 to hear the Gwana rhythms.

For today's selection I just want to remind people that African people are dying every day in conflicts across the continent , including Sudan and most people could care less. Omer Elamin released a cover of the patriotic song “Ana Sudani Ana” by the late and great Sudanese singer Hassan Khalifa Elatbarawi. The title roughly translates to "I am Sudanese." Its the sadness of all Sudanese over the civil war.

This is my favorite time of the year in DC. The New African Film Festival is going on at AFI Silver Spring. Its 12 days of African film showings. Ethiopian film makers were heavily featured this week so I'm sharing a cut by Abby Lakew called Tene Habesha. Enjoy and the festival runs through 3/27.

I missed posting this on Friday but since the music is from the diaspora we'll just say the delay was due to travel. Recently saw Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Great show. This cut is La Puerta. https://youtu.be/qcQ2c0jllhw
Also check out the group's fund raising effort to build Cafe Belongó, a cultural hub in East Harlem NYC https://www.arturoofarrill.com/news/belongo-and-arturo-ofarrill-announce-launch-of-capital-campaign-for-casa-belongo-a-culture-hub-for-creativity-collaboration-and-community-engagement

It's been a while since a MusicFromTheMotherland post, but Youssou N'Dour has a new album releasing this month. And since I'll be seeing him live in a couple of months, here's a little taste of the new music.
The video shows scenes from the communities in Dakar: men fishing, women in the market, Senegalese wrestlers and a communal meal.

Malian guitarist Habib Koité popped into town this weekend, It was a small space allowing him to recognize fans in the audience. His band was Ivorian balaphonist Aly Keïta, who was amazing and stole the show several times. Senegalese kora player Lamine Cissokho and Mailian percussionist Mama KONE rounded out the group. This cut, Hakilina, was not on the play list but it’s a good one. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMczRVpTbPk

Today's post is a little bit of a cheat. This is actually the Afro Cuban All Stars, a band which is unapologetically proud of being Cuban and living on the island now.
Saw them two weeks ago and the concert broke into a dance party multiple times during the show. Great fun and wonderful music. https://youtu.be/mguT1z_vBkQ
