Mushroom murderer Erin Patterson's lawyer announces intention to appeal guilty verdicts

The 51-year-old's lawyer says she will appeal a jury verdict that found her guilty of three murders and attempted murder.

That she was found guilty is not very interesting. She was really bad at hiding her tracks.

What is far more interesting is the attempt to deny her guilt. That is really something. Putting everyone through all that palaver, concocting so many elaborate stories. What incredible ego to persevere with the charade. What kind of mind thinks for one second they would get away with it?

And what ego would even attempt to murder a bunch of people anyway? That's what I want to know.

Well at last there’s an unsurprising verdict on the Erin Patterson mushroom murders case. I hope the survivor and the families of the victims will be able to find some peace after having the worst thing to ever happen to them became a global media spectacle.

I also feel for the jury. To be asked to spend so long on a case that is going to be scrutinised by dozens of podcasts, hundreds of news outlets and millions of people but not be able to talk about it is a huge ask and an experience that will likely haunt them for life.

This was always going to be newsworthy but it never should have been treated so much like entertainment.

Every so often I get an update on the mushroom killer from Shellie. And I'm never satisfied. All those podcast episodes and news series, all focused on her testimony in court and whether she might win or lose.

None of that is interesting. I just wanna hear a podcast that asks why she's even contesting the charges. Why is she maintaining this facade that she didn't do it? That's what's interesting here. How did she ever imagine she could get away with this murder plot? What makes her hubris so consuming? How she did end up so arrogant as to think her feeble attempts to mask the evidence would be sufficient? What drives a person to plot murder in the first place?

Most of us would never commit murder. Not just because "urgh what a pain in the neck that would be" but because "I'd get caught for sure." Here is someone who crossed both those lines and did it anyway. That's a story.

The daily details of how Erin Patterson tries to explain away the very compelling evidence is not so interesting to me.

I'd rather these podcasts talk about why she's bothering to lie about it still. That's what's interesting. Why keep up this charade?

Re the mushroom case, I have come to the conclusion that Erin Patterson is bloody stupid if she's guilty, and bloody stupid if she's innocent.
