Murakami Haruki wrote a book called “Underground” about the people who were impacted by this. The long term physical and mental health effects are so sad. Japanese society didn’t treat the victims well.

Summer Fishing in Lapland by Juhani Karila

Chose this book after browsing the shelves at the local library. Been so long since I’ve done that.

Haruki Murakami meets Lapland is my overall impression. Not that the author is mimicking Murakami but the over-the-shoulder, we are experiencing things as they happen, style of writing and whimsy- ala Harboiled Wonderland, A Wild Sheep Chase or Windup Bird Chronicle.

So happy I stumbled across this book.

Sometimes I’m astonished how much my early adulthood was influenced by Sakamoto and also by Murakami Haruki. Fresh out out university, moved to a new country - maybe not so surprising. But the soundtrack of Sakamoto and the script of Murakami still influences and reflects who I am today.

And, damn, Coda is an amazing documentary

Murakami Haruki ‘After the Quake’ Film Adaptation at Bitters End

‘After the Quake,’ a film adaptation of a Murakami Haruki story collection, has been picked up by Bitters End for international sales.

Variety

Reading Murakami Haruki’s first book “Hear the Wind Sing” and for some reason suddenly thought of al fresco dining in Japan. I remember multiple people in Japan in the early 90s trying to tell me that Japanese people don’t like eating outdoors. Yet they sit outside, drink, eat and sing under the cherry trees, and rooftop beer gardens were all the rage. But a café with outdoor seating was an anomaly. Go figure

Oh em gee!

I laughed so hard after my brain processed it...

Finally reading Murakami Haruki “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki” after many years of having bought the book. As always an uncanny style of writing like you are actually watching a person’s life and a pace that I’ve always thought of as a “walking style”. Can’t really ever explain it but it has a stride that just feels comfortable. Maybe it comes from his running.

Reread after many years, didn't get it then (if there is something to get). The merit of the author is conveying a story at the same time completely absurd and totally plausible. What else is there to do than to chase a starred psycho-possessing sheep in the Northern Japanese wilderness? Also laconically funny parts, you sense uncertain danger but mostly you just follow this young bored and boring man faithfully treading his destined path. #MurakamiHaruki #2024Reads #bookstodon #books
