Le musée de l'homme a exhibé les dépouilles avec beaucoup de dignité. L'exposition sur les momies — voisine de celle sur Magellan (qui n' apporte rien à celles et ceux qui ont vu la magnifique série documentaire sur Arte) était une bonne surprise. Rien de morbide, mais une présentation sobre et scientifique des personnes décédées qui témoignent dans leur mort de leur époque et de leur vie. L'exposition amène à réfléchir sur la mortalité et à engager la parole sur un sujet souvent tabou avec les proches. Palermos Catacombe dei Cappuccini entstand im 16. Jhd als unterirdische Gruft für die mumifizierten Leichname der Kapuzinerbrüder. Bald durften auch wohlhabende Palermitaner ihre Verstorbenen hier bestatten, was zu einer Sammlung von über 8000 Mumien führte, die bis 1920 genutzt wurde. Die Körper wurden mit Kalk, Essig und Wein konserviert und in Alltagskleidung der Epoche drapiert, was einen eigentümlichen Einblick in die historische Trauerkultur bietet.
