Trigger warnings. Relatively honest thoughts about multiculturalism. Next on News at 5, "man beats dead horse." Stay tuned.Multiculturalism, immigration, nationalism and racism are back on the agenda here in Australia (if they ever left) while at the same time sport is bringing us together. It's through this lens that the writer, a refugee himself, examines how the national debate divides while the Socceroos unite us.
A particularly useful insight for me is that any debate about future immigration policy settings should be about Australia's future needs and not about whistle-blowing - blaming people already living here.
Well worth a read.

When Nestory Irankunda scored against Türkiye, I saw a young man from a refugee background family carrying the shirt of a country still arguing about migrants — I saw the contradiction and the promise of Australia at the same time.
What does it mean for a nation to be a 'monoculture'?
By Doug Dingwall, Claire Campbell, and Will Jackson
Pauline Hanson has called for Australia to reject multiculturalism and be "monocultural". So what does it involve and are there any nations overseas that show what it might look like in Australia?

@Susan60
Yes! Including many Chinese - came for the gold, stayed to run laundries, restaurants & veggie gardens. Where would this country be without them? This whole ‘mono’ thing is a myth.
Pauline Hanson, leader of Australia’s populist One Nation party, lets fly with a whole list of grievances designed to appeal to those of Australia’s cash-strapped and struggling peoples who are not used to thinking terribly deeply about what is good and bad in Australian society.
In particular, what stood out for me was:
1) her attacks on multiculturalism. Here in Melbourne taking a trip around to any shopping centre or marketplace you see people from all over the world, not just Northern European. We benefit tremendously from this, for one thing from the wide range of foods from all over the world that we have accepted as our staple and that makes shopping for takeaways such a delight.
2) Saying that working people can be lazy and are too hard to fire. In particular she attacks childcare and parental leave. This is the only reason why many people are able to work at all. Especially when wages are so low and rents are so high. For example a young nurse can take home between $60,000 and $70,000 per year. Compare this with how much a politician like Pauline gets! Paid and/or subsidised childcare is beyond the reach of many and childcare staff are among the lowest paid.
3) Her nasty and spiteful attack on a member of the press who was just asking a question. She obviously admires Donald Trump and has taken a leaf from his playbook. Disgusting.
And many other things. I would be upset to see Australia go down the populist path like the United States and Great Britain. Read on….

As it happens, I grew up on the northern beaches of Sydney and I remember the ‘old times’ of The Corso at Manly in the 1970s. It is the strip between the ferry wharf and the ocean beach, about 800 metres of shops.
There was a fish and chip shop at either end, a pie shop near the ferry wharf end and an Italian deli in the middle that sold BBQ chickens. Then the 1980s arrived and suddenly there was a kebab shop …
Now it has all the foods from all around the world.
I’ll be sticking with #multiculturalism thanks and that very poor knock off of Ronald McDonald can fuck right off thanks
The Great Multicultural Experiment
In 2010, Angela Merkel declared multiculturalism had "failed, absolutely failed." Just years earlier, she and other European leaders had celebrated it. What changed?
