The big moorland fire at Harbottle, Northumberland, Easter weekend 2007. Started with a muirburn that hadn't been fully extinguished and spread across the Nature Reserve. I'm a big opponent of shooting managed moorland, but If whoever manages it is going to maintain dominant heather cover then they are going to have to burn or "strim" firebreaks, and rewet the once wet bits.. This stuff was an accident waiting to happen. #Moor #Northumberlad #Muirburn ##WildFire #Fire #Landscape
#FensterFreitag through the fire appliance window last night. Extreme wild fire risk so of course the farmers are #burning and #overgrazing rare #TemperateRainforest / #AtlanticOakwood (not to mention allowing Rhododendron ponticum to run wild) #SFRS #muirburn
That time of year again 😔. Wondered why it was so hazy for the northern section of the ride. Good article: https://parkswatchscotland.co.uk/2025/02/17/muirburn-and-the-government-failure-to-implement-wildlife-management-and-muirburn-scotland-act-2024/ #muirburn
Muirburn and the government failure to implement & Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024 - parkswatchscotland

Driving north up the A9 on Saturday Andy Cloquet observed muirburn on five sites between Dalwhinnie and Newtonmore with “an acrid smell over five miles of road” and sent parkswatch these two photos. The ostensible purpose of the Wildlife Management & Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024 (“the Act”), which was passed by the Scottish Government last...

Changing the Face of Scotland - Scottish Indy Podcasts

Grouse estates. Burning our moorland. Killing our eagles. Trapping our wildlife. The Wildlife Management and Muirburn Bill gets to grips with that. Is the Bill changing the face of Scotland?

the theory is that by burning off tall heather every few years it stimulates regrowth of young shoots of heather which is the main food of red grouse .…the target species for shooting.
Heather doesn’t thrive on deep peat, so burning it is pointless and causes damage to the peat, exposing it to drying and erosion and releasing carbon. It also causes fast runoff of rainfall which increases the risk of flooding to downstream communities.

Scottish Government consultation on wildlife management and muirburn: https://consult.gov.scot/environment-forestry/wildlife-management-in-scotland-2023/

Wildlife management just sounds like such an oxymoron 😵‍💫

The ‘wildlife’ didn’t ask to be managed!

But if this bill ends up meaning we collectively manage other species a little less – because *looks around* we’re not very good at being in charge – that will be a good thing
