Happy 303 Day!

There is a myth that when Roland released the TB-303 in 1981, they had no idea that some of the tone controls would later be used (by tweaking knobs while the sequencer was running) to make an 'Acid' sound.

A TB-303 advert from 1982 refers to these tone controls, and says: "to be varied at pleasure".

"At Pleasure".

"Obviously something had to be done about the abysmal signal to noise ratio. All tape recording efforts can be regarded as an uneasy compromise between losing the low level information in noise and the peaks in overload."

"Any sort of A&R interference with these groups' music was completely out of the question. If someone at the record company so much as hinted at a musical change, the atmosphere became violent. This hands-off approach is known as musical integrity, and it's what you have to have if you don't want a record deal nowadays."
