From Hood to Hollywood: The Rise of Princess Monique
This month, Head2Toe Magazine is proud to spotlight a woman whose journey redefines resilience, brilliance, and bold Black excellence—Princess Monique.
Known professionally as Princess Monique Filmz, her story begins in the inner city of Cleveland and rises all the way to Hollywood’s elite stages. But this isn’t just a tale of glitz and red carpets—it’s about purpose, perseverance, and paving the way for those who often go unseen in the film industry.
A Voice for the Unheard
Princess Monique isn’t just a director—she’s a storyteller who centers Black narratives with truth and power. From her early days in front of the camera on The Parkers and The Steve Harvey Show, she grew to directing critically acclaimed episodes of Greenleaf, Black-ish, and Our Kind of People. Her evolution has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Through her lens, Princess has brought authenticity to screen—stories rooted in community, culture, and identity.
Breaking Barriers Behind the Camera
Graduating from the prestigious Disney/ABC Directing Program, Princess became a force behind the scenes. Her holiday film Seasons of Love, executive produced by Taraji P. Henson and starring Gladys Knight and Method Man, proved that Black women directors are not just capable—but essential.
With each project, she challenges the lack of diversity in Hollywood. She shifts the narrative to one that includes, uplifts, and empowers.
Champion for Change
Beyond film and television, Princess is the founder of Real Black Unicorns, a nonprofit focused on mentoring and supporting African American female directors. She is also the author of Hood to Hollywood, her inspiring autobiography. It encourages dreamers to stop waiting to be discovered and discover themselves instead.
Her mission? To pull others up as she climbs.
More Than a Cover Story—A Movement
Princess Monique is not just this month’s cover story—she is a reminder that your past doesn’t determine your future, and that there’s power in owning your story. Her journey is living proof that purpose and persistence can overcome any barrier.
