One week from today Firestorm will be hosting @MsKellyMHayes in conversation with organizer Ash Williams to discuss the launch of "Read this When Things Fall Apart," a new publication of letters to activists and organizers on the frontlines in catastrophic times.

“If you need an antidote to despair, this book is for you. It’s a repository of fortifying collective wisdom, a tonic for our troubled times. The letters Kelly Hayes has collected offer vital insights amid the darkness, shrewd strategic advice for aspiring change-makers, and a reminder none of us are in the fight alone.”—Astra Taylor, co-author of "Solidarity: The Past, Present, and Future of a World-Changing Idea"

This podcast episode from #MovementMemos on grief was insightful, inspiring, and beautiful.

Touches on pandemic grief, how authoritarianism and fascism erase grief, and more.

Highly recommend a listen if that interests you.

From the Ashes: How Grief Shapes Our Struggles

"So, when I was able to encounter “DS9,” I think, as David was pointing out, it’s very Black, it’s a little bit gay. It’s really just a totally new way, especially for mainstream television, of approaching the “TNG” [“The Next Generation”] franchise and the idea of the United Federation of Planets.

And I think that the real, even if imperfect, anticolonial politics of the show is something that’s so powerful and so rare, especially the ways that they were able to explore, I know we’re going to speak about this later, ideas of violence and what it means to organize against the status quo in real ways. So, I do often go between the “TNG” franchise, “The Next Generation,” and “Deep Space Nine,” because sometimes you really love a cleaned-up and tidy universe in which capitalism does not exist, the associated violence do not exist. And sometimes, you really just want Daddy Picard to just end every 45 minutes with something that just feels morally right in the world. But “DS9” is darker. It reflects power, imperialism and race, and really centers those struggling against it as real people."

This week's episode of #MovementMemos is a primer on predictive policing. Andrew Guthrie Ferguson and I talk about the history and failures of predictive policing technologies and raise the alarm about the creation of new data empires. https://truthout.org/audio/predictive-police-tech-isnt-making-communities-safer-its-disempowering-them/
Predictive Police Tech Isn’t Making Communities Safer — It’s Disempowering Them

“We haven't seen public safety systems privatized in this way that we're seeing now,” says Andrew Guthrie Ferguson.

If you listen to #MovementMemos, I just wanted to give folks a heads-up that the show will not be returning until next week. We had planned to have our first episode of the year drop tomorrow, but we ran into some production issues, and I just wasn't up for the work marathon that publishing this week would have required.
It's time for my top ten list of things I made/wrote this year that I'm proud of. At the top of the list is one of the best episodes of
#MovementMemos we've ever created: Vigil for Palestine: We Mourn and Consider What Solidarity Demands of Us https://truthout.org/audio/vigil-for-palestine-we-mourn-and-consider-what-solidarity-demands-of-us/

For our last #MovementMemos episode of the year, I spoke with Palestinian feminist Rana Barakat, who lives and teaches in the West Bank, about Palestinian history, Indigenous resistance, belonging, family, and why she views solidarity as a form of love. https://truthout.org/audio/palestine-is-about-living-in-spite-of-everything/
