@admin For anyone reading who needs a new instance https://connectop.us has room for more. We are a tiny instance spun up when mastodon.lol shutdown. We also made a step-by-step guide to move. The screenshots are from .lol and our server, but work for any Mastodon instance. Another place to look for an instance is https://instances.social/ . Mentions only (DM) me if you'd like help moving regardless where you decide to go, I am happy to help as I can. #NewInstance #FindNewInstance #ServerChange #ChageServer #NewServer #FindNewServer #MoveAccount #AccountMigration

Testing approach for #MoveAccount
1 add a few followers to see how well accounts show up as followers on new account after move
2 send a few toots (from old account) so that new account can boost those toots
3 request archive of toots from old account
4 export/import data (csv) files
5 redirect the account - take some screen shots
6 reactivate the old account
7 move old account - take more screen shots (compare with item 5)
8 check if old account can be reactivated

Does the #MoveAccount process just move followers to the new account and then add a redirect notice at the old account?

If so then after a move
- the old account should have zero followers
- the followers should eventually be added to the new account
- it should be possible to reactivate the old account (remove the redirect).

If not then if should not be possible to reactivate the old account (aka remove the redirect).

If the #MoveAccount process essentially just moves followers from the old account to the new account then when the process has completed the user could end up with two functional accounts.

Since most people do not need the extra hassle of managing two accounts it is probably better to leave the redirect in place on the old account.

#MoveAccount Implications:
All followers are moved from the old to the new account.
No other data is moved automatically (especially the toots).
All toots remain accessible at old account.
The old account is excluded from searches and displays a redirect notice.
A moved account cannot be moved again for another 30 days.
The old account is not fully usable afterwards but access to data export and re-activation is available.

During a #MoveAccount process some users might be concerned about what happens to the toots on the old account.
For various reasons moving the old toots is complicated in most cases depending on how many toots there are.
For example a toot or it's attachments might be acceptable on the old server but violate the rules on the new server.
It is a good idea to start planning for a move before the very first account is setup – something that most people do not consider.

#MoveAccount

During the autumn of 2022 many people left Birdsite over concerns of how toxic the service had become. Some of those people learned a difficult lesson about losing their followers and messages built up over many years.

Before joining any new social media service people would we well advised to make plans for how they can backup and restore their data in case they have to leave the service.

#MoveAccount
It is worth spending some time planning for a move.

Recommendation: select a new server, setup an account and send some toots from that server before actually moving the old account to that server.
If the old server is not being shutdown or defederated then the user has more time to properly plan a move.

Some ideas for selecting a new server and more details about moving an account will be added to the new account.

And you can export your Bookmarks via a CSV file that you can import into your new account at the new instance, but you can't do that with Favourites. I didn't know that before I hit the Move button and my old account became inaccessible. That's a shame.
