Weathered

The high peaks of the mountain are ribbed by erosion and cut by water. The scree slopes soften the lower reaches, carrying the waterfalls down to ground.

Morning Gold

Early October, 07:30.
A layer of heavy cloud was hanging above us. Briefly, sunrise underlit the raincloud and touched the misty mountain flanks with golden fingers.

A moment later, the sun slipped behind the blanket of dark cloud overhead.

Breiðdalsvík in eastern Iceland. The mountain is Snæhvammstindur¹ and at the tip on the right is the appropriately named Mosfell.

Dappled

Travelling through Tröllaskagi, we decided to detour through Hörgárdalur and see the other side of Hraundrangi mountain.

Looking back towards the main Route 1 ring-road, we saw Bægisárhnjúkur and the deep cleft created by the river cutting between the mountains and flowing down into the valley.

On the right is the glacier Bægisárjökull.

Going Round The Bend

A drizzly day as we made our way south down Gemlufallsdalur valley towards Dýrafjörður fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland.

Flatafjall (469m) is ahead of us.

Eagle's Back

The tip of Eystrahorn mountain rises above Hvalnes like the back view of an eagle preparing to fly away.

Cloud sits astride a peak and is gently pinched by it.
Scree slopes tumble towards the lagoon.
Small buildings nestle at the foot.
The white dots of swans punctuate the water's edge.

A sublime moment.

Leeward

This beautiful and dramatic pyramidical stack of basaltic strata is a regular stop for us. It has a wonderful strength about it.

Every time we've been there, it looks different. This time, a clump of cloud had formed on the leeward side of the peak, and patchy sunlight was picking out details in the structure.

Misty Pyramid

Columnar basalt is amazing rock, tall hexagonal blocks with enormous vertical strength but with a tendency to flake away in slices from the top.

The result is gorgeous stepped pyramidal shapes like this one, and many similar others around the country.

The waterfall left of centre is Prestagilsfoss.

#MountainsMonday
Not in the photo, but there is a lot of heavy duty helicopter traffic today, following the forest fire the other day.

In The Mists

Vatnajökull on a cloudy, drizzly day. Wreathed in fog, the stark contours have another kind of beauty.

Nothing can hide all of the mountains though. We had to approach quite closely to see through the cloud, but it was worth the walk.
