    A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

The film industry is a great industry, with infinite possibilities for good and bad. Its primary purpose is to entertain people. On the side, it can do many other things. It can popularize certain ideals, it can make education palatable. But in the long run, the judge who decides whether what it does is good or bad is the man or woman who attends the movies. In a democratic country I do not think the public will tolerate a removal of its right to decide what it thinks of the ideas and performances of those who make the movie industry work.

Honestly, I am inspired by Madame Kaja Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia, for posting collages every six months of the books she has read on her Instagram. Well, so I made my version too but for the films. I will make this a tradition for me. I am looking forward to your opinions and film recommendations, feel free to tell me!

I skimmed Patrick McGilligan’s recent biography of Woody Allen today. Like the reviewer, I found the writing on the film making, especially Allen's work with the cinematographer Gordon Willis, rewarding.

While working on his book, McGilligan polled "104 US film critics, scholars, and entertainment journalists" to discover which of Allen's films rated most highly by informed viewers. Here are the results:

    1) Annie Hall (84 votes)

    2) Crimes and Misdemeanors (54); Hannah and Her Sisters (54)

    3) Manhattan (46)

    4) Purple Rose of Cairo (26)

    5) Midnight in Paris (24)

    6) Zelig (21)

    7) Broadway Danny Rose (20)

    8) Radio Days (18); Match Point (18)

    9) Vicky Cristina Barcelona (13); Blue Jasmine (13)

    10) Bullets over Broadway (12)

A Woody Allen biography for the rest of us, not haters or superfans

Patrick McGilligan’s exhaustive 'Woody Allen: A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham' addresses controversies but is more interested in the filmmaker's best work.
