FreeBSD 15 + CDE is probably the closest you can get to sitting in front of a high-end UNIX workstation without owning a time machine.

Running Common Desktop Environment in 2026 feels strangely refreshing. No blur effects, no Electron, no notifications fighting for attention, No ai written code, just Motif, terminals, man pages, and a desktop paradigm that was already mature before I was born.

Current setup: • FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE • CDE • dtwm • bhyve • Motif everywhere

Today’s activity: reading bhyve(4) manuals and pretending I'm a UNIX admin in 1996.

#TIL that there was Photoshop for Silicon Graphics workstations and it looks great in its #Motif garb.

I've been an #fvwm user for a long time (early 2000's) and I've always appreciated it being more configurable than any other window manager out there.

But lately, there's been a few excellent scriptable window managers popping up that have it beat. After many random attempts, I've finally switched the main desktop to #awesomewm

The biggest challenge has been how to make it not look so darn flat. I like my #cde / #motif / #4dwm / whatever style borders, so getting that implemented in awesomewm took me an embarrassingly long time, but the fact that I was able to do it, is certainly a testament to it's customizability.

Got the #MKDOCs machine fired-up... maybe I'll get more of the #manual done next week? It's mostly stubs right now but, I will at least use a #Motif. It is sporting my custom #font of course.

I changed tense at some point, it was late. I'll get back to it another time maybe.
