Still very few moths in my garden down south in Brighton so far this year. This cheered me up though. Had to gently help it out of the base of the trap with a soft brush. I really love these Buff tip moths (Phalera bucephala). My favourite non hawk moth.

I usually follow back, & really appreciate boosts.

The weather here has been poor this year, with low moth numbers. Here's one from exactly a year ago - a Pale Tussock. I particularly like it because it has the same fur colouring as Archie. 🙂

All moths are attracted to harmless UV light, recorded on the Sussex and UK databases, & safely released.

I usually follow back, & really appreciate boosts.

Meet the Puss moth, Cerura vinula. It has a Wingspan of 45-70 mm, so relatively large. Common in the UK, but few have seen one, as they are nocturnal. Named for reasons of obvious fluffiness of its dense, white, hair.
All moths are humanely trapped, recorded on the Sussex and UK databases, & safely released.

This an Elephant Hawk-moth, Deilephila elpenor. It has a Wingspan of 45-60 mm, so considerably larger than the Small Elephant hawk-moth in an earlier post. The colours are vivid and really surprising. Common in the UK, but few have seen one, as they are nocturnal. One pic shows my grandson aged 3 releasing one back into the wild.

I usually follow back.

Today's moth is an Angle Shades, Phlogophora meticulosa. The wings fold along the body, and the markings resemble a withered brown leaf, for protection from predators.

All moths are humanely trapped, photographed, recorded on the Sussex & UK databases, & safely released.

This is a Buff Arches, Habrosyne pyritoides. It's really strange to look at - the patch behind the head almost looks like a hole, and is visually confusing.

All moths are humanely trapped, photographed, recorded on the Sussex & UK databases, & safely released.

This one is a Spectacle moth, Abrostola tripartita. Wonder why they called it that? ;-)

Leopard Moth Zeuzera pyrina. This is the only one I've managed to see so far. Not your usual 'little brown job'.

Not many moths fly this time of year, but these two are aptly named December moths, Poecilocampa populi, and they have been around for about 6 weeks.

As you can see, they are built for the cold, having their own winter fur hat/scarf.

I usually follow back, and really appreciate boosts. 🙂
