The cathedral in Aachen consists of several sections, each of which was built at different times ranging from the early Middle Ages to the late modern era. The foundation stone was laid around 795. The first mosaics were added in 997, but most were added between 1902 and 1913 in a neo-Byzantine style.

Mosaic around an image of the Virgin Mary in the St. Johannes Baptist Church in Bergisch Gladbach-Herrenstrunden (near Cologne). The small church, which at the time belonged to the Johanniter Commandery, was completed in 1345.
