"Russian officials indicated in 2019 that the Kremlin would be willing to back off from its support for #NicolásMaduro in Venezuela in exchange for a free hand in Ukraine, according to #FionaHill, an adviser to President Donald Trump at the time.

"The Russians repeatedly floated the idea of a 'very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine,' Hill said during a congressional hearing in 2019. Her comments surfaced again this week and were shared on social media after the U.S. stealth operation to capture Maduro.

"Hill said Russia pushed the idea through articles in Russian media that referenced the #MonroeDoctrine — a 19th century principle in which the U.S. opposed European meddling in the Western Hemisphere and in return agreed to stay out of European affairs. It was invoked by Trump to justify the #USIntervention in Venezuela."

Trump's former Russia adviser says Russia offered US free rein in Venezuela in exchange for Ukraine

Russian officials suggested in 2019 that the Kremlin might reduce support for Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in exchange for a free hand in Ukraine. Fiona Hill, an adviser to President Trump at the time, first made the comments during a congressional hearing which resurfaced this week after a U.S. operation to capture Maduro. Although no formal offer was made, Moscow's ambassador to the U.S. heavily hinted at a swap. Hill told AP that she went to Moscow to tell Kremlin officials that Ukraine and Venezuela were unrelated.

The President of the United States does NOT have the right to unilaterally take this country to war, even against a corrupt and brutal dictator like Maduro. The United States does NOT have the right, as Trump stated this morning, to 'run' Venezuela. Congress must immediately pass a #WarPowers resolution to end this illegal military operation and reassert its constitutional responsibilities.

Trump campaigned for president on an '#AmericaFirst' platform. He claimed to be the 'peace candidate.' At a time when 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, when our #healthcare system is collapsing, when people cannot afford #housing and when #AI threatens millions of jobs, it is time for the president to focus on the crises facing this country and end this #MilitaryAdventurism abroad. Trump is failing in his job to 'run' the United States. He should not be trying to 'run' Venezuela."

Excerpt: "Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark, has once again become a point of heated international discussion, after White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller told CNN on Monday it's 'the formal position of the U.S. government ... that Greenland should be part of the United States,' and after Mr. Trump this weekend said the U.S. needs Greenland.

"Denmark has long rebuffed the Trump administration's interest in Greenland, reiterating that rebuke this week. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said an American military move to seize control of Greenland would amount to the end of the NATO military alliance. Denmark is a NATO member, and NATO's Article 5 states that if a NATO ally suffers an armed attack, all members will consider it an attack on them as well and do what they need to aid the attacked nation.

" 'If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops,' Frederiksen told local media on Monday. 'That is, including our NATO, and thus the security that has been provided since the end of the Second World War.' "
