"Two of the leading progressives in the US Congress, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced legislation on Wednesday that would impose a nationwide moratorium on the construction of new artificial intelligence data centers amid mounting concerns over their insatiable consumption of power and water resources, impacts on the climate, and other harms.

"Sanders’ (I-Vt.) office said in a press release announcing the #ArtificialIntelligence #DataCenterMoratorium Act that the construction pause would remain in effect 'until strong national safeguards are in place to protect workers, consumers, and communities, defend privacy and #CivilRights, and ensure these technologies do not harm our #environment.'

"Sanders and #OcasioCortez (D-NY) are set to formally introduce their legislation at a press conference on Wednesday at 4 pm ET.

"Food & Water Watch (#FWW), which last year became the first national organization in the US to call for a total moratorium on the approval of new AI data centers, celebrated the first-of-its-kind bill and called on other members of Congress to 'move quickly to sponsor, champion, and pass' it. FWW’s groundbreaking call for a national AI data center moratorium was later echoed by hundreds of advocacy organizations at the state and national levels.

" 'We need a halt to the explosive growth of new AI data center construction now, because political and community leaders across the country have been caught completely off guard by this aggressive, profit-hungry industry,' Mitch Jones, FWW’s managing director of policy and litigation, said in a statement Wednesday. 'It has yet to be determined if—not how—the industry can ever operate in a manner that sufficiently protects people and society from the profusion of inherent hazards and harms that data centers bring wherever they appear.' "

Ein Vergleich

Als ich kürzlich in Rom war konnte ich dort im #Sportforum zahlreiche Handwerker auf großen Gerüsten beobachten, die an der imposanten Ruine der 1.800 Jahre alten CARACALLA THERMEN
Restaurierungsarbeiten ausführten um dieses #Bauwerk zu erhalten.
#SeptimusSeverus war 206 der Erbauer und 235 wurde das Bauwerk durch #SeverusAlexander
vollendet.
Diese Anlage war noch im 5. Jahrhundert betriebsbereit und konnte durch die Bürger Roms immer noch eintrittsfrei genutzt werden.
Da die Anlage am Stadtrand Roms und in einer ärmlichen Gegend angelegt wurde, kann angenomen werden, dass sie erbaut wurde um die Popularität der Kaiser beim Plebs zu steigern.
Neben einigen #Schwimmbecken und #Gärten beherbergten die #Thermen #Gymnastik- und #Versammlungsräume, #Bibliotheken und diverse #Dienstleistungsbetriebe wie #Friseurgeschäfte.
Täglich konnten die Thermen ca. 2.000 #Gäste aufnehmen.
Meine Bewunderung über die #Römer führte zur Trauer und Wut über das Schicksal des SEZ in Berlin!

Durch die gegenwärtig Verantwortlichen soll es abgerissen werden.
Das vollständige SEZ war täglich für bis zu 15.000 BesucherInnen ein #Erlebnis und #Freude.
Der Abriss ist in diesem historischen Vergleich ein sinnloser, gegen die #Bevölkerung gerichteter Frevel!
Der eingeleitete Abriss des SEZ muss durch ein
#Moratorium zum Stopp der Vernichtung kommen.
Die #Verantwortung der Abrissverfechter, die das Areal auf der Grundlage eines falschen Bebauungsplanes aus dem Jahr 2018 umnutzen wollen darf nicht hingenommen werden.
Wir leben in einer "Metropole" genannten
Bürgergemeinschaft, die mehrheitlich den Wert
des erhaltenswerten Gemeingutes SEZ erkannt
hat und die Kulturgutvernichtung verhindern wird.

Today in Labor History January 31, 1971: For the second time in six months, rioting broke out during an anti-war protest in East Los Angeles. Police fired into the crowd, killing one protester. The anti-war demonstrations were organized by the Chicano Moratorium. Chicanos were dying at a higher rate during the Vietnam War than white Americans. During the August 29, 1970 protests, police killed three people, including Journalist and Civil Rights activist Ruben Salazar. Oscar Zeta Acosta portrayed Salazar in his 1973 novel, “The Revolt of the Cockroach People.” Hunter S. Thompson portrayed Acosta as his “Samoan attorney” in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Salazar was the first Mexican journalist for a mainstream newspaper (L.A. Times) to write about the Chicano community. He also worked as the Times’ bureau chief in Mexico City and covered both the Tlatelolco Massacre and the U.S. occupation of the Dominican Republic, both in 1965. Because of his outspoken support for the Chicano movement, and his criticism of racism and police abuse against the Chicano community, he was a target of FBI surveillance. Many believe his death was an assassination.
