Video of Gordon Bateson presenting at #mootjapan24
I have known Gordon since at least 2014 and he is an absolute renaissance man with skills in many areas. In this video he talks about using #ChatGPT to create questions for #Moodle. An interesting and thoughtful presentation.
My #MoodleBox presentation at #MootJapan24 was mainly to compare using #RaspberryPi 5 vs Pi 4. It is much faster (perhaps 2.5 times) but requires more power. With great power comes the need for cooling, though the case I have is passive and has no fan.
I bought a 100W power bank with me showing it is an entirely stand alone #Moodle server that requires no internet access and serves as its own Wireless access point. Several people at the presentation logged into it from their own devices.
Influence mongers are one of my favourite types of mongers. I like fishmongers, ironmongers and cheese mongers, but a skilled well intentioned Influence monger is a joy. (By the way I despise war mongers).
To upskill my influence mongering abilities I approached people at #MootJapan24 with #CatalystEU stickers asking if they would pose for a photo with them on their laptop cases, nobody declined. Here is #Moodle wizard Thom Rawson, one of the Moot organisers being mongered.
I went out for a drink in Sasebo yesterday evening at the end of #MootJapan24. This Edward Hopper-esque photo captures the spirit of a lovely evening.
They are mainly professors of English, and are from all over the world. We swapped our personal origin stories and our #Moodle origin stories. I learned so much about the life of westerners in #Japan and how Moodle became what it is today.
I had a tremendous feeling that “these are my people”.
My keynote presentation at #MootJapan24 today was “Automated feedback for language teaching” and introduced my #AIText question type.
This is a fork of the #Moodle core essay question type but with first pass grading and feedback done by a Large Language Model, #ChatGPT in this case, as soon as the student presses the submit button on each question.
I am involved in a presentation at #mootjapan24 of #Moodlebox, a small and cheap mobile device working without Internet. It combines a wireless access point with a full featured #Moodle server. I have bought an example based on the #RaspberryPi 5 with me along with a powerpack to demonstrate it can be used entirely stand-alone.
I will be presenting it in person as part of my keynote it at Moodle Moot Japan in February

I have been experimenting with self hosting LLM's, e.g. https://github.com/jmorganca/ollama and thinking of getting the responses to be based on a cron to allow for slow responses. I would like then to work out what is the cheapest single board computer to run it on so it could be a companion to the #moodlebox raspberry pi installation of #moodle #mootjapan24
