Fatal gaffe by Charlene with Pope Leone? What’s going on?

Welcoming the Pontiff in full white during an official visit: a mistake? A fatal error? Absolutely not. Charlene of Monaco, the Princess Consort and wife of Prince Albert II of Monaco, is spot on and silences all possible criticism of her outfit worn during the welcome to Pope John in the Principate. Charlene, famous for her looks always exceeding expectations and inspiring unparalleled elegance, appeared in total white upon the arrival of the pontiff in Monte Carlo. However, this has fueled discussions on social media, and some criticism was directed at the princess.

What few people know is that instead, Charlene followed the protocol to the letter. Although it is almost obligatory to wear black during papal audiences, the princess applied the “privilege of white,” a special concession applied and reserved for very few queens or Catholic consorts.

The Vatican protocol stipulates a derogation and allows a few selected sovereigns to wear white clothing and veils in the presence of the Pontiff. This privilege is granted to some Catholic royal families, and white symbolizes an ancient gratitude of the Holy See towards specific Catholic kingdoms and linked to the Pope by deep historical ties of friendship.

While the rest of the consorts must, according to ceremony, display a black tailored suit with long sleeves and a covered head, Charlene instead wore white. Together with her, only a few others in the world. The “privilege of white” is indeed reserved for Queen Sofia and Letizia of Spain, Paola and Mathilde of Belgium, Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and Princess Marina of Naples.

And, to bury the criticism of the princess, are Charlene of Monaco’s previous records that she has already used in the past the full white suit. She had already done so, for example, in 2013 and in other official visits, to the good pleasure of the Vatican and its ceremonial protocols.
