Monotropa uniflora: this great little plant without chlorophyll.

It has been a minute around here; I’ve been very busy with moving to a new home, work, and of course loved ones.

However I’ve squeezed in a few hikes and mushroom foraging (I’ve had a very good year for Chantarellus, which are my very favourites).

There it is, the final piece! No more #WIPWednesday for this one.
Monotropa uniflora II, made by request for a customer. As always, it’s much more beautiful in real life, with a lovely color gradient in the light that shows many more subtle hues than photos can capture. The flowers have a glossy sheen, as if covered in dewdrops. The base is covered in 'wet' twigs and mossy earth made out of felt.

Ghost Pipe or Indian Pipe (Montropa uniflora) is a myco-heterotrophic wildflower that parasitizes mycorhizal fungus to get its food rather than photosynthesizing.

These are common where I live and I see them from summer into early fall. The pink hue is visible on some of the plants when they first emerge and later changes to white.

Some pretty Ghost Pipes (monotropa uniflora) from last summer 👻🌲☀️ They are a parasitic flower because have no chlorophyll of their own, and they are one of my favorite native flowers in my area.

#IndianGhostPipe - #MonotropaUniflora

Herbaceous, #perennial flowering plant.

It can't generate its own chlorophyll & is #parasitic - specifically #mycoheterotroph. Its #symbiotic #fungi hosts are in the #Russulaceae family.

Through the fungal web of #mycorrhizae, #GhostPipe roots sap food from where the host fungi are connected to the #photosynthetic #trees. Clustered node roots of this plant are covered in hairs called #cystidium. The #cystidia found on these roots allow easy attachment to #FungiHyphae. As it's not dependent on sunlight to grow, it can grow in very dark environments, like understories of forests.

#Indigenous #Cherokee peoples feature the "pipe plant" in some of their #CreationStories. The legend states that the plant was named "Indian pipe" due to a group of chiefs quarreling without resolution, while passing a pipe around during the dispute; the Great Spirit then turned the chiefs into the plant, as they should have smoked the sacred pipe after making peace with each other. The plant is said to grow wherever friends have quarreled.

Native to #PacificNorthwest & a few other areas too.
