This portfolio belonged to the late Jan Tholenaar, a Dutch bibliophile whose extensive collection of books, type specimens, and ephemera is best known for serving as the inspiration behind Taschen’s Type: A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles. The Tholenaar collection was Letterform Archive’s first major acquisition nearly ten years ago.

THE MONOGRAM IDEA
The latest queer fancy is to have a monogram embroidered on blouses and jumpers. So far it is only seen on the more expensive models of heavy crepe de chine or satin, but it is pretty certain to slide down the scale to the remnant counters. When a monogram transfer and a skein of floss silk can be bought for threepence each there is nothing but good sense to prevent every girl and woman from going about labelled like a pillowcase. It is a fashion that seems to have little to commend it. To flaunt initials on outer garments suggests an unwarranted obtrusion of one’s personality on people not interested in it—like a very loud voice shouting private business in a tramcar. The fancy is reminiscent of the days when people had “Florence” or “Ada” inscribed on silver brooches.
