On #VancouverIsland - almost all the #MonkeyTrees here are related to the first ones planted in #Holberg at #RonningsGarden - in a remote area near #SanJosefBay on North #VanIsle. It boasts the #WorldsTallest monkey puzzle tree. In 1995 it was measured at 77 feet—higher than a 7 storey building.

Monkey trees can live for thousands of years, if they are not cut. In Chile & other parts of #SouthAmerica its on #EndangeredSpecies list because of mass #deforestation.

I love stumbling upon monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana), a species native to Chile, in Seattle. This one is in the Arboretum, but not the one was relocated from Ballard in 2008 that started out as a "quirky gift" from a teenage son to his mother, who planted it and it grew to 21 ft.

Fun fact: Monkey puzzle tree saplings were handed out to Century 21 World's Fair visitors in 1962.
