Con lei c’era anche la figlia, Giorgia Sommacal, 23 anni, studente della stessa università. E ancora Muriel Oddenino di Poirino, ricercatrice dell’ateneo genovese e originaria del Torinese. Insieme alle tre donne c’erano gli istruttori subacquei Gianluca Benedetti di Padova e Federico Gualtieri di Omegna, che si era laureato pochi mesi con una tesi seguita proprio da Montefalcone. Si era immersi nell’atollo di Vaavu, alle Maldive, per esplorare una grotta a circa 50 metri di profondità. Ma non sono riusciti a risalire per cause ancora da accertare.
Montefalcone era la più esperta del gruppo. Professoressa associata in Ecologia all’Università di Genova, volto noto anche in tv, ricercatrice e studiosa dell’ambiente marino, la docente – che aveva quattro corsi di riferimento – lavorava presso il Distav, Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, ed era nota per il suo grande amore per il mare e per essere responsabile di alcuni importanti progetti in ambito marino quali Talassa, GhostNet e MER “A16-A18”. Aveva 51 anni.
Con lei c’era la figlia Giorgia Sommacal, che avrebbe compiuto 23 anni tra pochi giorni e condivideva la passione per le immersioni con la mamma. Anche Oddenino, 31enne di Poirino, era una ricercatrice all’ateneo genovese, mentre Benedetti e Gualtieri erano istruttori subacquei. Il primo era il capobarca: originario di Padova, dopo una lunga esperienza nel mondo delle banche e della finanza, aveva deciso di esplorare nuove strade e di trasformare la subacquea, passione di lunga data ed impegno lavorativo già svolto da molti anni part-time in Italia, in un’attività a tempo pieno. Gualtieri, 31 anni, era stato uno studente di Montefalcone, con la quale si era laureato a marzo scorso in Biologia ed Ecologia Marina.

Il Tempo: Maldive, le salme individuate a 60 metri di profondità: "Recuperarle? Rischioso"

Secondo una nota delle Forze di difesa delle Maldive, il corpo di una delle vittime dell'incidente è stato individuato, prelevato a e trasportato al centro sanitario di Fulidhoo. Più dura la sorte per le alte salme, per le quali l'operazione di recupero è stata classificata "ad alto rischio". Uno dei corpi è stato infatti individuato "all'interno di una grotta a circa 60 metri di profondità" e si ritiene che anche gli altri quattro sub si trovino nello stesso luogo.  "Si tratta di un'operazione ad alto rischio, motivo per cui sono stati inviati altri sub della Guardia Costiera" oltre "ad attrezzature specializzate". La nave Shaheed "resterà" nell'area fino al completamento delle operazioni".

Agi: Maldive, morti cinque sub italiani

AGI - Cinque turisti italiani sono morti alle Maldive, durante un'escursione subacquea nell'atollo di Vaavu. Lo ha reso noto la polizia locale. La scomparsa dei subacquei era stata segnalata intorno alle 13.45 (ora locale, le 10.45 in Italia). Le forze dell'ordine hanno avviato le ricerche non appena ricevuta la segnalazione e hanno ritrovato i corpi di tutte e cinque le persone.
Secondo le prime informazioni raccolte dai media locali, i cinque turisti, ospiti della Duke of York, una barca da crociera subacquea gestita da stranieri, sono scomparsi durante un'immersione vicino ad Alimathaa. Si sono immersi al mattino e l'equipaggio ne ha segnalato la scomparsa quando non sono riemersi nemmeno a mezzogiorno.

Sebbene la polizia abbia confermato di aver avviato un'indagine, le cause del decesso rimangono al momento sconosciute e non è stata ancora rilasciata una dichiarazione ufficiale. Le condizioni meteorologiche nel sito di immersione erano pessime oggi, con l'Ufficio meteorologico nazionale che ha emesso un'allerta gialla per la zona, ancora in vigore.
La Farnesina conferma 
La Farnesina ha confermato la morte di cinque subacquei italiani. "In seguito a un incidente occorso durante un'immersione subacquea, cinque connazionali sono deceduti nell'atollo di Vaavu, nelle Maldive", si legge in una nota. I cinque sarebbero morti "per aver provato l'esplorazione di alcune grotte a 50 metri di profondità", si spiega. Le autorità delle Maldive stanno ancora ricostruendo l'accaduto, precisa la nota. "La Farnesina e l'ambasciata d'Italia a Colombo seguono il caso con la massima attenzione sin dalla prima segnalazione; la sede sta provvedendo a prendere contatto con i familiari delle vittime per fornire ogni necessaria assistenza consolare", si spiega ancora.
