Lismore Castle was built in the 12th century, on the site of an abbey from the 7th century (most of what you can see dates from the 19th century).
It was the residence of the Earls of Desmond, briefly became the residence of Sir Walter Raleigh, and is now owned by the Duke of Devonshire.
Chemist Robert Boyle (of Boyle's Law for gases) was born in Lismore Castle.
The grounds are gorgeous, and the approach on the N72 by the river from the east is stunning.
