Panagia Sumela Monastery is carved into a steep cliff in northeastern Turkey. It is located in Altindere Valley near Trabzon at about 300 meters altitude. Founded in the 4th century, it is one of the oldest monasteries in the region. The monastery is famous for its frescoes, caves, and dramatic mountain location. Today it remains one of the most visited religious sites in Turkey.
