On bumping

Q: If a pedestrian is walking along, head down and engrossed in their phone, and they bump in to me, what should I do?

A: You should apologise as soon as you can.

It is a coarse act to divert someone’s attention like this. If you have the time, a gentlemanly way to make amends is to walk a few metres ahead of the pedestrian whispering “make way” to passers by. This, of course, has the benefit of simultaneously helping others avoid your mistake.
