In a shocking turn of events, when you have:
- open invite access
- no self-moderation tools
- an unacceptable levels of moderator to users
Then user experience degrades rapidly. I suppose from the BS point of view they're seeing what the minimum they can do is.

I don't, I think a costed model of a fediverse server needs costs of running the server, compensation for the mod team and therapeutic support incorporated.
I think there's a sweet spot in terms of subscriptions where some people who can't pay, don't pay and it all works.
I think I'm ok with chipping in a bit of money to my server because I know the mods support me and not the advertisers and I have over 50 ignored complaints on FB to prove it.

Would it not be better to encourage a fundraising culture on instances so that they are self-supporting?
Openness about the costs of running it and the costs of supporting moderators in terms of therapy, administration, cycling them through, and even (whisper it) paying them?
Seems like this would be an easy carrot to go with the defed stick?

What steps are you taking to improve moderation on Mastodon.social with the plans to funnel all new users to that server?
Looks like a big influx from Twitter and that seems like a exponential increase in interactions.
The thing that seems to be totally forgotten is that Mastodon thrives on good instance moderation.
In November, POC accounts were getting banned and accused of racism which, I assure you, is what many people know Mastodon for now. No, that's not fair, but you only make one 1st impression.
How on earth is mastodon.social going to keep up with an exponential growth in users and need for smart experienced mods? I'd love to hear from server owners!
Lightning quick. I've seen someone say something horrendous, reported them and by the time I reached the end of the thread, they'd been suspended.
C.f. Twitter where reports from November were still trickling in from January.
Huh... if Mastodon was centralised then the mod team would be bigger than pre-Musk Twitter... I certainly imagine their combined numbers alone beat the big 5 and their enthusiasm is unmatched.
Huh... some people are just looking for an excuse after biting off more than they can chew.
I wouldn't run a server because I have neither the technical know how nor the money. Also the self-knowledge that I get easily dis... ooh! A butterfly!
