i recently played #Mixtape, mostly out of spite to see what the fuck the fuss was about, if i'm honest. i really like the music picked for the storytelling, it is the key spelling point of the game. there are people saying you can get away with watching the game on YouTube and i actually agree with them. there aren't a lot of key interactive elements that make me go "oh, you have to play it" like What Remains of Edith Finch. the story is nice and feels like more of a film turned into a video game than anything else. it is NOT a 10/10. there are issues i have with the gameplay being a little lackluster in places. but overall, this is a fun time.

yes, go play it if you like short, narrative focused games. no, it's not a 10. as is usually the case, the outrage and hype meet somewhere in the middle for an enjoyable time.

strong 7/10, light 8. good for Beethoven and Dinosaur.

Just finished Mixtape. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. The fact that it was lightly interactive is an added bonus. It really demonstrates how effectively a video game can be used as an artistic storytelling medium far more effectively than just film alone.

They captured the late 80s / early 90s vibe so well, and the soundtrack was perfectly curated.

I wonder if this is going to spark a John Hughes style era where video games stop making original scores and instead carefully license their soundtracks from existing bands. Man that would be cool.
