Why MiniDisc in 2026? I use MD to record some albums that are IMPOSSIBLE to buy because of the offensive prices (more than $150, even $600) especially from CantoPop or MandoPop !

And for digital albums I buy from Bandcamp and other sites.

That 💽 media is perfect for me!

@gsuberland I literally have all of those tracks on a #MiniDisc. In fact, it's too quiet in here today!

Weird, after the audio file is recorded to the disc, I can plug in the recorder over USB and change the name of the audio file. I hear the proverbial "scrunch" to indicate it is being written to disc.

So maybe the problem is with Platinum-MD's encoder...this seems like a library issue...

#Minidisc

I've been using Platinum-MD on my Mac mini for a few years to convert/send audio files over USB to the recorder but the application is stuck on 'converting atrac'. I thought my Sony mz-n505 minidisc player had lost its ability to record.

However, I just successfully recorded a single track output through a USBC to 3.5mm cable to the minidisc recorder in LP2 mode, which tells me the problem is actually with Platinum-MD.

Yeay, the old tech is still working!

Now to fix the new tech...

#Minidisc

I have successfully upgraded this minidisc player-recorder from a dead 800 mAh lithium ion battery to a new 2.7 mAh lithium polymer battery using a 3d printed gumstick adapter, some thick aluminum foil, and painters tape (for easy removal).

Here it is happily charging its new battery.

What are people using to convert #MiniDisc #ATRAC files to something more modern, while preserving the original quality as much as possible, but not increasing the file size beyond reason?

For example, I have some ATRAC3 LP music in .wav files here, and would like to have it as Opus, Ogg/Vorbis, or MP3 files. Linux CLI tools preferred.

Sure, the input isn't exactly high fidelity, but I don't want to decrease the quality further. FLAC increases the size tenfold though, which is ridiculous.
