The secret to retention isn't in the recording, but in the retrieval. After a meeting, try building a mind map from memory first before looking at your raw notes. This forced recall strengthens the neural pathways and highlights exactly where your knowledge gaps are.

Every now and then, I've tried using mind-map software to assist with brainstorming/planning -- and then given up on it, because any mind-map which ends up being non-trivial is enormous and can't fit on my screen, and for trivial mind-maps, why would I need a mind-map in the first place?

Do any of you mind-map? With software? With bits of paper? How helpful do you find it?
Am I doing it wrong? Is it just that I'm not enough of a "visual learner"?
Is the software I've used just badly designed?

What would you recommend?
