Another "Save PC Group" time slot at Mimata's Free Night school. A 9yo boy showed interest for the first time and GCompris kept him entertained on his own. He did checkers (against Tux) and then some sort of maze game. The maze game made Rackets "planet cute" come to mind so I said that if he was interested we could probably [figure out how to] make a game like this with a programming language. Gcompris kept the kid occupied so I could check out the learn-to-draw table (with fruit!!) and stretch a bit with the hip hop section too. The biggest breakthrough for Freedom software may have come from a chance conversation with the poetry group. I shared a printout with qr-codes^1 and the link^2 they opened was barely usable with a big, moving add at the top of the page. It's easy to forget how awful web pages are if you use Firefox with add-ons (extensions 拡張機能) like NoScript and UBlock Origin. No I feel guilty for introducting these links to students! If the poetry duo follows up on my offer to get together with some WiFi to install the browser and add-ons that make on-line pages readable.. I'll have to make a slideshow or something about it, subject students to it too... Interested people are great for motivation.

If any of the kids and their Moms show up with old PCs I can set them up with a safe, free machine for learning. But I get the impression people there don't have PCs, or aren't interested in them. Everything is little FoolPhones now. Maybe things will work out to discover ways to get over that hurdle, but in the meantime threre's a lot of non-screen stuff to do with people. It's the community that's important. It would help my attention span if people used [matrix] element so I don't have to check IG for scheduled timeslots...

Another Wednesday night Free Software time slot! This 7(?) year old girl has been intent on learning chess moves with G-compris durig her last 3 or 4 visits. She comes every other week with he Mom who is the Hip Hop Dance instructor. I was distracted while signing with the two nice Deaf woman and the Mom had to request the PC setup for her daughter. The GNU/Linux Debian Gnome setup that boots to G-Compris was all set up, I just had to get a guy to move to another table so the girl could sit down and focus on chess. She was quick.. I've been going through the HipHop stretching warm up routine with the Mom but got called over to the PC. The girl somehow ended up with 8 applications opened over 5 workspaces. When a new blank workspace opened up the logo key was either forgotten or wasn't helpful enough. I had to close Inkscape and Gimp so she could focus on Fellswoop, "Five in a row"?, and Nibbles. Nibbles with the arrow controls is hard on this laptops keyboard. Maybe it's hard in general of little young people? But the girl is intent. Maybe she'll take it on as a challenge over the next month or so... Maybe I should ask around for an old game controller or find some way to make it more intuitive for a 7yo?

Sense of Wonder..
At the Biotope building next to a nursery school two kids were exploring the little pond(?) with nets. One kids let me hold and photoshoot his little lobster (crawfish? crayfish?).

I offered my finger wondering how much it would hurt and if one this size would be safe to share with smaller or just more hestitant kids. It didn't pinch. Maybe they wait till you put them in your mouth or something. That strategy might work with Maron. I started to feel bad for it, it seemed weakened, maybe that's whey it didn't pinch, and got to hoping it would be set free before it died. I had to give it back to the kid that lent it to me, hopefully he set the cute little bugger free in time...

All this went on thanks to the the "Cafeteria" 「給食」 timeslot on Tuesday Nights with Mimata's Free Night School, Busy families and Single Moms can get together and chat, play dodgeball, goof with nets in the Biotope, with all the time saved by having dinner taken car of. I get to see a lot of friends here while they eat so I've been encouraging (supporting?) the effort with a cake. Thanks to this urge I got competent with the Okara Carrot cake. It's probably a little healthier than the Jewish Apple Cake: Okara and Carrots! And Nutmeg along with all the cinnamon.. When I make and extra cake and have it in the refrigerator I end up toasting some for breakfast a lot more often than I do with the JA Cake. And using Nutmeg gets you thinking about Amitav Ghosh's _Nutmeg's Curse_ and how to get over the Blood and Soil BS for Stories and Place: We gotta care for the dirt and the mountains where we are... "Love the Place you're with" to misquoe an 60s(?) song...

The Freedom Software 自由ソフト time slot is back to Wednesdays. There were a lot more people then usual this Wednesday because of a special event with the people from the nearby army (Self Defense Forces 自衛隊) base. Usually it's only one guy doing camouflage hiding, stealth walking and interesting exercises. This time there were a group of people in organizing some sort of quiet run event. It was hot so sometimes kids would come inside for a coolness break. Three elementary school tried GCompris and TuxPaint. I tell everyone if they bring in an old PC, or some machine that no one is using I'll set it up the same way. It's mostly just planting seeds now I guess, maybe when the Win10 support ends... I should really talk to the people about a special Freedom Software presentation and demonstration by then, I guess...

It's good to have something like this that forces you out into the town to talk with people, see faces, carry babies around. I'll have to remember to take Maron more often. She was popular with everyone and might enjoy the change of scenery. It will be important to remember she's out there and that she should be reassured regularly. Hopefully nothing will sneak into the yard and eat the chickens while she's gone. With the longer days the chickens don't go to roost for the night in their safe cages until after 6:30 or so.. Makes it hard to go out for the night without worrying about getting back and shutting their cages before they get eaten.

A student was nice enough to set up a [matrix] id and be interested in the Free Night School. Not being good with schedules I couldn't answer questions better than directing him to the org's Instagram account. Withe "yorugakkou" he found the account and sent me a screenshot. A guy runs around with his phone at the start on Friday Nights. I hit a similar pose before and he said "It's video!" Scary.
