AUKUS
The dead duck.
This outstanding article 👇says everything and more about just how badly Aus govt has been played for utter fools.

All that money down the American drain. Its probably gone to Trump for missiles and his fcking ballroom, when we need it here for housing, hospitals, wiping HECS, aged care, NDIS, govt schools, building rail networks and oh yes green tech to disinvestment from oil.

The weakest link: Australia’s submarine hopes depend on the UK, but Britannia no longer rules the waves

If the US is unable to provide Virginia-class submarines and the UK’s timeline to build the Aukus class falters, Australia could be left with nothing

About #NATO and their spending of 5% of #GDP. Is all insane. Is 5% meaning a 5% stronger military force? Nope. Every country are going to spend to achieve 5% goal instead of investing in the right gear to get a 5% Steiner force. Once again, what you measure vill give you either inflation and money that goes into wrong pockets or a better, stronger military force.
Why have spending as a goal in the first place?

The EU has just approved a military budget of 800 billion. Meanwhile, the budget for health, education and ecological transition is struggling to keep up...
War or prosperity? The question is no longer economic, but philosophical.

There have been changes over my professional life in the treatment of #militaryspending in the system of national accounts. Originally it was regarded as collective/government #consumption and thus current expenditure. At some stage - I think in the 1990s - much of it was reclassified as #investment . This attracted less attention than the inclusion of some illegal activity which occurred at the same time. Classifying some #militaryexpenditure as investment could justify borrowing to do so !
