An interesting perspective on the #MilitaryBrat I had not considered. https://kolektiva.social/@LeftistLawyer/113357313556992572

A quick #MilitaryBrat 🧵 /1 I’m what is commonly referred to as a military brat. The term has different connotations to different people. Maybe surprisingly, maybe not, most people I’ve come across over the years bandy the term around with a sense of pride. I’ll admit I was one of them. Of late, I began questioning the usage and here’s what I found. The term originates from the British. It’s an acronym, which makes sense given the military’s acronym prone ways. B.R.A.T. stands for British Regiment Attached Traveler. I don’t think many are aware of this, and assume it relates to the child of a military parent’s disposition. And I think that assumption has stuck, because there is something a little different about military children. My anecdotal journey follows …

I have a confession to make. I lived in Germany when I was about 3 years old. That's not the confession. But my first candy ever was Haribo Gummibärchen (Gummi Bears ). It was what I received when I was good or to be appeased as a child. Let's just say that a German brand candy in Germany is rather accessible and I buy them all the time. Sugar + Nostalgia = Happy feels.

Also I was a strange child and I confused my parents to death by loving things like Jägersoße and Champinion-Rahmsoße. I've also always loved Kohl ( cabbage ) based things and after Potatoes and Onions the sheer quantities of cabbage germans will eat is just off the scale. My restaurant alone prepares Weiss, Grün and Rot Kohl. Germans generally have a either or check list of "Is it a root" or "Is it a bitter leafy cruciferous vegatable", if yes than put it in my mouth. Oh my holy fuck the Asparagus Germans will eat. They will eat so much that they have to start importing it from Poland.

Anyways: My brain also does this check list and goes "OH GODS DELICIOUS. OH GODS RELEASE THE ENDORPHINS".

TL;DR German cuisine is cheater mode endorphins and comfort for me because I was here when I was three.

So our neighbors, whom we like more than any other neighbors we've ever had, left town today. They've been emptying their house for a month. Today was the real "goodbye."

As a military brat, saying goodbye is something I've done a lot. It's never fun. As a child, it meant "forever." These days, there's email and Zoom if you want to stay in touch.

But one of our neighbors was a special friend to me. His name is "Bruzer."

And dogs don't use email.
