These modern styles of complex storytelling, on TV, movies, books, games, with their twists and turns, perspective shifting, revealing secrets that change assumptions, these all teach empathy and critical thinking skills.

It’s no wonder fundamentalist religions like LDS Mormonism restrict its members to children’s media, simplistic and one-sided. It isn’t about the sex and violence. That of course is a distraction. It’s about keeping you unquestioning, limited in depth and breadth of thought, so that you can accept their one-dimensional view of the world. Their story, and their story only, without wondering if there’s some secret that would turn it all on its head.

Stereotyping and westernizing other cultures wasn't just a way to colonize and subdue and dehumanize people from those cultures. It was also a mind control technique to keep westerner common folk from being exposed to elements of those cultures that might be adopted and break the elites' control.
