Escaping exile in #Siberia, the Russian #anarchist (and #antisemite) #MikhailBakunin arrived in Britain on #ThisDayInHistory in 1861. He later settled in Switzerland, warning that #KarlMarx's dictatorship of the #proletariat would be led by autocrats in the name of the workers.

ANARCHIST'S OATH

Having met Mikhail Bakunin in Europe in 1862, the historian Konstantin Kavelin wrote indignantly to his wife not only about his differences in "way of thinking" with the revolutionary, but also about the fact that Bakunin "gave the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia an oath not to escape arrest, and he himself fled. Moreover, he took the oath with the intention of breaking it.
