Hormuz Strait, the US is pushing for a UN resolution against Iranian tolls and mines.

The UN – Stopping the imposition of tolls in the Strait and the laying of mines along the waterway. These are some of the requests included in the resolution drafted by some countries, including the United States, and which will be presented to the Security Council.

“There are very simple and direct things – the US Ambassador Mike Waltz explained to the journalists – to cease attacks on commercial ships; to stop laying mines and removing them from an international waterway; to stop the imposition of illegal tolls in the Strait of Hormuz and allow the United Nations to allow humanitarian aid, life-saving aid, to pass through that international corridor. It’s really that simple.”

“The problem – he added – is that just this week, Iranian state media announced that the regime has launched what it calls the ‘Persian Gulf Straits Authority’, with which it intends to demand that all ships – commercial, civilian, international – register and pay a bribe, a toll, to use these international waterways.”

Global Implications and Condemnation

“And this doesn’t just concern this region: it concerns the whole world. Imagine. Imagine if two countries, regardless of conflict, regardless of who started what, let’s hypothetically, Spain and Morocco in dispute with each other, decided to lay naval mines in the Strait of Gibraltar and then began to demand money from ships to cross it, in a cynical attempt to exert leverage on the other side, imposing collective punishment on the whole world to resolve a bilateral dispute. It is unacceptable – he concluded – immoral and illegal according to international law.”

Hormuz Strait, China and Russia reject the UN resolution that envisages “all defensive measures” to liberate it.

China and Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, a text that had been watered down from the requests of the Gulf countries to include authorization for the use of force, but which still did not garner enough votes. Eleven countries voted in favor, China and Russia voted against, while Colombia and Pakistan abstained.

The initial text proposed by Bahrain would have authorized countries to use “all necessary means” – a formulation that would include military action – to ensure transit through the Strait of Hormuz and deter attempts to close it. After Russia, China, and France – all Security Council members with the power to veto – had expressed their opposition to the reference to the use of force, the resolution was revised to eliminate all references to offensive actions, authorizing only “all necessary defensive measures.” But even this text was rejected.

“The Strait of Hormuz is of too vital an importance to the world to be used as a hostage, to be suffocated, made a weapon, by any state,” said US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, following the decision by Moscow and Beijing. “We have long known that these countries are capable of acts of obstruction,” Waltz added. But the vote “does not prevent the United States” from continuing its military campaign against Iran. The request from Bahrain, supported by other Gulf countries, “was not unreasonable.” “It was a simple resolution. Russia and China could have chosen better partners. They could have stood with our Gulf allies, but instead Russia preferred to be a supplier of critical Iranian military equipment. The world now knows exactly who prefers obstruction to stability.”
