Trump wants his face on the $250 bill: the prototype is already ready at the Treasury.

First, there was the idea of building a giant arch 76 meters tall to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, then the disappointment of the ballroom at the White House, which will not receive any federal funding. Now Donald Trump is also considering dedicating a $250 bill. As revealed by the Washington Post, the US administration is putting pressure on the United States Mint to design the new currency with the tycoon’s portrait at the center. However, by law, only deceased people can appear on currency.

According to internal sources of the WP, in recent months the White House has increased pressure on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the agency responsible for creating new currency. The initiative promoted by two high-ranking Treasury officials, Treasury Secretary Brandon Breach and Advisor Mike Brown, however, has encountered internal resistance for legal and procedural reasons, even though it has overcome the technical hurdle that Trump is still alive, any new issuance requires congressional approval. The president, it is reported, is determined to get what he wants, to the point that the director of the office responsible for printing, Patricia Solimene, was reassigned from the end of last month after reporting the regulatory obstacles and the time required for the eventual creation of the new bill.

The project includes the preparation of prototypes and graphic drafts with Trump’s face at the center of the bill, accompanied by symbolic elements such as the colors of the American flag and references to the anniversary of the founding of the United States. The graphic work was also carried out by British painter Iain Alexander, who, according to the WP, limited himself to approving modifications to the original project, including the inclusion of some details such as the logo celebrating July 4th. Alexander stated that Trump loves to call him “his favorite British artist.” In any case, the law that prohibits this practice remains in place: it has been 150 years since the last time a living person was imprinted on currency in the history of the United States. This was a Treasury official who appeared on the five cents, certainly not the level Trump is aiming for, rather drawing inspiration from figures of the caliber of George Washington (on the $1 bill), Thomas Jefferson (2 dollars) or Abraham Lincoln (5 dollars).

The practice was banned in 1866 but a year ago, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the country's birth, a proposal to Congress brought it back into vogue. In February 2025, Congressman Joe Wilson (Republican from South Carolina) presented a bill that would have required the Secretary of the Treasury to “print $250 bills from the Federal Reserve with the portrait of Donald Trump.” The bill was assigned to the Financial Services Committee of the House, but it has not yet been discussed: however, the government has informed that the Treasury is evaluating the proposal. If the “Trump bill” does not go ahead, the president still has a plan B: preliminary activities are underway to print new $100 bills with the tycoon’s signature.

Electoral law, chaos in the Committee. Opposition against the majority: “We want to see your new text.”

The discussion in the Constitutional Affairs Committee at the Chamber of Deputies begins in the worst possible way regarding the electoral law reform. And perhaps it couldn’t have gone any worse. At the opening of the proceedings this morning, the opposition parties demanded an accounting for whether a new text from the majority was coming, as learned from the press. And that, in the event of a positive response, the discussion would not begin until the measure was submitted. The text already prepared at Montecitorio is that signed by Galeazzo Bignami.

Now, however, even to avoid the risks of unconstitutionality, the majority had revised some aspects of the reform, starting with the increase to 42% of the threshold beyond which the bonus is earned for eliminating the run-off. After an hour of interventions by the opposition (Gianni Cuperlo, Simona Bonafè, Federico Fornaro, Vittoria Baldino and Marco Grimaldi), the general discussion began under the direction of the committee chairman, Nazario Pagano. “It’s a game of hopscotch,” Cuperlo commented on the sidelines, a Democrat, “We asked that at least the speakers illustrate the changes but instead we started with the debate.” The new document, as learned, will arrive tomorrow.

“As always, there are draft laws on which the general discussion has been opened in the committee and, at its conclusion, based on what emerged from the hearings, the speakers will draw the consequences,” Pagano declared. “And it’s likely that they will make proposals for amendments, but “on how to intervene,” i.e., with a revised text or via amendments, “has not yet been decided.” But if there is a revised text, the opposition demands hearings and “there will be a presidential office” that will assess how to proceed and “will depend on the changes: if they are very significant we will evaluate it in that forum.” “It doesn’t appear to me that the text,” initially signed by Bignami, “will be overturned” but nonetheless “I have nothing against possible new hearings.” Pagano then observed that the majority and he himself in the role of chairman have “always shown openness” to the opposition in the discussion: “I was also in favor of a small committee but if you always oppose a ‘no’ that is Soviet…”

Regarding the center-right’s goal of formulating a new electoral law that goes beyond the Rosatellum, Igor Taruffi, the Pd’s organization manager, spoke on Agorà, on RaiTre: “The majority knows perfectly that the game is open, the results of yesterday attest to this. We rightly talk about the capitals of regions, of provinces, but in many municipalities in the province of Naples with 70-80,000 inhabitants – Ercolano, Portici – or of Milan, which are many, the center-left has won by a landslide. And what does that obviously mean? That in those territories, in those constituencies, the center-left will win by a landslide at the next elections, something that the center-right knows, and therefore what does it propose? To remove the single-member constituencies and to change the electoral law, awarding extraordinarily large majority bonuses even to those who take just one more vote. Because they know that with this electoral law they will not return to Palazzo Chigi.”
