China Miéville - Armada

De vertaalde versie van 'The Scar' dat ik al eens luisterde.

In hetzelfde Steampunk universum als Miévilles doorbraak 'Perdido Station' speelt zich dit geweldige verhaal af.
Laag onder laag onder laag en de hoofdpersoon kan niet anders dan ze langzaam afpellen.

De prachtig bloemrijke schrijfstijl van China Miéville is door Annemarie van Eyck op een knappe manier in het Nederlands behouden. Zo wordt een zinkende onderzeeër volgekotst door de zee, naar mijn smaak een geweldig beeldende metafoor.

Miéville is een geweldige schrijver en openlijk marxist, wat toch ook een bonus in deze barre tijden. Aanrader kortom.

Finished reading China Mieville's novel Un Lun Dun. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a blast to read and very funny. I particularly liked the twist (which I won't reveal) and the inventiveness throughout. He must have had a lot of fun writing it and it shows. IMO it rivals the Alice In Wonderland books in its mix of very gentle body horror, surrealism, and satire of politics. Mr. Speaker is right up there with Humpty Dumpty, and the illustrations recall John Tenniel's.

La ville a une gare. Mais *Perdido Street Station* n’est pas un simple centre de transports. C’est un nœud, une masse, une tour cyclopéenne qui domine New Crobuzon comme une colonne vertébrale hypertrophiée. Elle pulse au centre du livre, visible depuis tous les quartiers, à la fois repère, menace, et symbole. Elle n’organise pas la ville : elle la dévore.

Endlich gehe ich Teil 2 der #BasLag Trilogie an. Bin gespannt, ob 'The Scar' mich genauso fesselt, wie vor ca. 10 Jahren 'Perdido Street Station'. Verspüre Vorfreude :)

J’espère que son imagination littéraire du monde d’« ailleurs » soit plus cohérente que son emprise sur la réalité de ce monde-ci. Il s’est mis carrément au-delà du réel quand il a rejeté récemment une invitation d’honneur à Berlin pour des raisons farfelues – oui, je sais qu’il est furieusement pro-Palestine, d’accord, mais traiter le chef du DAAD de raciste parce qu’il a annulé la remise du prix Albertus Magnus à Nancy Fraser, prof états-unienne qui soutient le Hamas et qualifie Israël d’état « ethno-suprématiste » ? Même pour un trotskiste comme #Miéville ça me parait trop rigoureux. Le raciste en question s’appelle Joybrato Mukherjee, mine de rien. 2/2
