𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 – 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 & 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲

Every year on November 9, we observe Microtia Awareness Day to shine a light on microtia—a congenital condition where the outer ear is underdeveloped or missing. This day honours those living with microtia and spreads awareness for early diagnosis and access to proper care.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮?

𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀:
- 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗜: Slightly smaller ear, mostly normal features.
- 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗜𝗜: Partially formed ear, often with a closed ear canal.
- 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗜𝗜𝗜: Most common; small, peanut-shaped ear remnant, usually no ear canal.
- 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝗜𝗩: Complete absence of the outer ear (anotia).

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱
- 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀: Often due to absent ear canal.
- 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Sometimes linked with other facial anomalies.
- 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Risk of bullying and emotional stress.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
- 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆: Using rib cartilage (gold standard) or synthetic materials like MEDPOR or SUPOR.
- Early diagnosis and expert care improve outcomes.

- Promotes early detection and treatment.
- Reduces stigma and bullying.
