Today’s small moment — remembering Monocle Lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

This photograph was taken a couple of summers ago at Monocle Lake, near the Point Iroquois Lighthouse, just west of Sault Ste. Marie. We visited this lake often when I was growing up, and it’s one of those places that has stayed with me over the years.

Looking back at this image, I’m reminded of how peaceful it always felt there — calm water, quiet trees, and a sense of stillness that never seemed to change. Some places live on through memory just as clearly as they do in real life.

The kildeer determined to nest on the driveway has finally gone and done it, despite all the passing cars.
At least she chose the edge.

I put up flags to mark where the nest is, and now will leave her alone.
