I'm working on some photos of the restored #MichiganCentral station for a friend, which I took last summer. I didn't know I'd be visiting the station when I left NY, but I was glad I brought my #fisheye lens!
A visit really gives you some idea of what #train travel used to be like in the USA.
Michigan is finally re-opening Michigan Central Station, and throwing a helluva party to boot. I've been saying it for years, but Detroit really is back. Maybe it's corny, but it brings me so much joy to see so many showing their love for Detroit.
I remember showing my wife Detroit and her being blown away because of how the popular depictions differed from the new reality. Years ago.
This isn't an attempt to show something that isn't there, but rather a celebration of how far it has come. They aren't putting resources into a big splash that theyβre hoping will draw back businesses and people and culture.
Instead, the Michigan Central Station is a capstone project, delayed like Fisher Body Plant 21 as being too big and unnecessary to be worth reclaiming. Now, both will be centerpieces of a reborn Detroit, a center for food and culture once again, the pride of Michigan finally burnished and shining bright.
Ideally, #MichiganCentral would be paired with a new station in Windsor as customs places and #Amtrak and #viarail would create a new #Eurostar like company or service that would make things easier like the Cascades as opposed to the Maple Leaf
