Rob Reiner’s Life in Pictures
Remembering the actor and filmmaker’s remarkable career—from his beginnings on All in the Family to his run as one of the industry’s most sought-after directors.
By Hillary Busis, December 15, 2025
Hollywood is still reeling in the wake of news that director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were killed in their Brentwood home on Sunday. As tributes to both pour in, we’re taking a look back at Reiner’s remarkable career—which began in earnest on the set of the hit 1970s sitcom All in the Family, back in the days when Reiner was best known as the son of comedy legend and Dick Van Dyke Show creator Carl Reiner. Though his parentage may have helped Reiner get his foot in the door, his talent is what got him to the next level: He won Emmys for All in the Family before moving behind the camera, directing This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men in a single eight-year period.
Below, find 28 images that tell Reiner’s story—from the TV titan’s kid to canonical filmmaker.

From Seinfeld to Shawshank, Rob Reiner changed Hollywood for ever
Reiner’s own films reshaped modern comedy and drama with their intelligence, empathy and range. But through his company, Castle Rock, he paved the way for Seinfeld, Sorkin and many more…

As a film-maker, Rob Reiner championed humour, civility and intelligence – qualities you suppose would be out of step with the Hollywood of the 1980s where he made his name, and in the 1990s where he scored a series of extraordinary, far-reaching successes. Reiner had a family interest in the workings of on-screen comedy: his father Carl had played a key role on Sid Caesar’s TV shows, which themselves were revolutionary, and helped birth a new generation of screen comics by directing Steve Martin’s film debut The Jerk. Rob had become a household name as Meathead, the liberal foil to Carroll O’Connor’s bigoted Archie Bunker in 70s sitcom All in the Family (the equivalent to Mike Rawlins v Warren Mitchell in the British original, Till Death Us Do Part). But it was as a director and producer that he really made his impact felt.

In 1984, Reiner released This Is Spinal Tap, a “mockumentary” about a fictitious heavy metal band from the UK that rewrote the rules on what comedy could do. It sent up rock’n’roll behaviour and codified its cliches (with Reiner himself doing a hilarious parody of Martin Scorsese’s hosting role in The Last Waltz) and gave us zingers that haven’t lost their comedy power more than 30 years on: “The numbers all go to 11”, “it’s such a fine line between stupid, and er … clever.” Its deployment of improvised comedy was revolutionary for a Hollywood feature, and while Reiner wasn’t the first to use the fake-documentary techniques for comedic purposes (that goes back at least to Woody Allen’s Take the Money and Run), it hugely popularised the mockumentary style; subsequent efforts include Bob Roberts, Fear of a Black Hat, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. All these owe Tap a huge debt – as well as the microgenre of star Christopher Guest’s improv-mockumentaries: Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. Almost incidentally, Spinal Tap became a sort-of-real band, with tours, record releases and a follow-up feature (Spinal Tap II: The End Continues), in which the presence of music industry titans Paul McCartney and Elton John demonstrated the high regard in which the original was held.

Trump’s Continued Degradation
By Liza Donnelly, Dec 16, 2025
Yesterday we learned that the wonderful movie director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were murdered in their home. Authorities believe their son is responsible. It’s so incredibly sad. Nick Reiner spoke about how he had been in and out of rehab over a dozen times, and was helped by his parents through it all over the years. Apparently, Nick had argued with his father the night before their murders. It’s just heartbreaking, and hard to know what happened and why. I suppose we’ll find out eventually.
It’s been a difficult week. So much hate. And then this: after the news broke about the Reiners’ murders, Trump wrote on social media:
It’s actually crazy talk.
And then later, he doubled down. [See embedded YouTube video.]

We all have unfortunately become accustomed to horrible things from Trump, but this hits a new low for me. They are the comments of a narcissistic, cruel human being. In the hours after he said these things, many condemned them, including members of the Republican Party. It was good to read that some members of the GOP have a sense of decency. But I just checked the various mainstream outlets that I read daily, and I see no mention of Trump’s horrific words anymore. Why can’t there be a way to keep pushing back on this horrible behavior? And keep calling him out loudly on how he treats female reporters? Has mainstream media lost its decency?
Rob Reiner was a political activist, very vocal in his opinion against Trump. He was angry and not afraid to show it. This morning I thought, wouldn’t it be sweet if Trump’s comments about the Reiners’ murder are the thing that really bring him down? That the crudeness of what Trump said, how mean it was, how really crazy the comments were, will be what push people away from him. Trump’s support is eroding, and this certainly added to it. That would have made Reiner happy, I bet.
In other news: Hegseth witholds video of boat survivors’ deaths. “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth refused to share video of a heavily scrutinized Sept. 2 military strike on a suspected drug boat during briefings with Congress on Tuesday. Mr. Hegseth faced calls to share unedited video of the attack, in which a follow-up strike killed two survivors, but said he would play it only for the House and Senate Armed Services committees. Mr. Hegseth added that it would not be made public. The U.S. military attacks have killed at least 95 people.”
Unemployment numbers rose today to a four year high, causing worry for the economy. Trump shrugged it off.
And the Epstein files have still not been released.
I don’t want to draw a cartoon about Trump again today, it’s too hard. So I leave you with a couple of snow people!
I hope you’re holding up okay, it’s been a rough week. Thank you for being here, I’m very grateful for your company. Have a good Tuesday.
