I wrote about the rock, metal and punk scene in Bulgaria in the late 80s, in case you want to read about something that isn't horrible and scary

New flowers, black sheep, dancing scorpions - Rock beyond the wall, part I: Bulgaria

I suppose this is pretty ambitious for a blog who’s been out for such a short time, but I’ve had this idea for months and have already done a lot of reading (and some listening). In short, I’d like to look into, write and post a small series of articles about the alternative music subcultures in the dictatorships in the (former) Eastern Block in Europe. As a historian whose main focus is the 20th century, I have the necessary base of knowledge to build upon, as well as the research skills that were drilled into me since my first week at university. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to a lot of scientific databases that might have given me a lot more information to work with (and quote, so my articles look more serious than they are), but I can work around that. And keep a more casual tone so you won’t get bored halfway through.

German metal, fake identities, and a band named after a swamp. The saga of Mekong Delta proves metal history is stranger than fiction—and often funnier too.

Mekong Delta: The Layout Is Not Working and I Have No Idea Why

I always thought that Fozzy’s fictional backstory was too contrived to be funny: an American rock band spends 20 years in Japan, somehow unaware that artists like the Scorpions and Ozzy Osbourne ha…

Judas Priest once gave us the Metal Gods. In 2001, they also gave us… Cyberface—a malware slasher so dumb he should’ve come pre-installed with Clippy. 🤖💀

Cyberface: Judas Priest’s Malware Monster

“Cyberface” (2001) was drummer Scott Travis’s first songwriting contribution to Judas Priest. I’m not surprised it was also the last. I don’t know if this is the dumbest song in Priest’s catalog, b…

After 40+ years of noise and 30 of irrelevance, Sepultura is finally hanging it up in 2026. Call it a farewell tour, call it a cover band retirement party — either way, the circus is over. Good riddance.

Sepultura’s Farewell: Roots Shitty Roots

After 40-plus years of existence and about 30 years of irrelevance, heavy metal band Sepultura will finally call it quits in 2026. For a group that not too long ago released an album called Kairos …

Possessed’s Seven Churches broke ground musically, but lyrically it barely scratched the surface. Revelation gave us blazing eyes, mouth swords, and Satan's throne — yet we got clichés about “terror” and “blood.” Imagine a concept album that never was.

Possessed: Less Than the Sum of Its Churches

In 1985, thrash/death metal band Possessed recorded a song and an album named after the Seven Churches of Asia from the Book of Revelation. Lyrically, both the song and the album are disappointingl…

Slayer nailed Mengele but botched Purgatory. "Raining Blood" sets up a theological impossibility—and misses the chance to tear religion down from the inside. Know your enemy, or risk just playing dress-up.

Slayer: Raining Blood, Missing the Point

According to Slayer songwriter Jeff Hanneman, “Raining Blood” (1986) is “about a guy who’s in purgatory ’cause he was cast out of heaven. He’s waiting for revenge and wants to fuck that place…
